We appointed Bev McArdle to lead the Rest Homes Team in January, taking over from Colleen who will continue to volunteer for the team for the foreseeable future.
We caught up with Bev a few weeks into the role to see how she was getting on.
‘The first two weeks at City Mission have been a steep learning curve but an enjoyable one.
I have met so many people: staff, volunteers, trustees and many, many residents in the rest homes so my mind is full of names but not necessarily with the faces to match. However, I have been made so welcome in all the settings I have visited and I have received so much encouragement. At the prayer breakfast so many people came up to me to say they had met people whom I know or in talking to people I discovered we had friends in common. God’s family is a beautiful and complex network!
The greatest joy has been visiting the homes. It was only when I started visiting that I realised how important the chance to worship together is for so many elderly people who can no longer get to church. More than one thanked us for coming with tears in their eyes. Other people who are becoming lost in their own worlds suddenly become animated when they hear the hymns they sang when they were young and the biggest impression I have gained of these little services is the sense of great joy.
I am looking forward with excitement to what God plans to do in the rest homes across the city as there are so many homes and people still to be reached.’
If you work in a rest home and do not yet have Bev and the team visit, email firstname.lastname@example.org, they would love to hear from you.
